Transit Of Venus Due On The 5th/6th June 2012

A transit of Venus is due to occur on the 5th and 6th of June 2012. A transit is when the planet Venus passes directly between the Earth and the Sun and is one of the rarest of astronomical events. The last one occurred in 2004 but the one after 2012 is not due to occur till 2117

The transit will provide scientists great research opportunities as previous transits have done. The transit of 1639 for example, allowed scientists to estimate the most accurate distance of the Earth to the Sun than had previously been achieved.

The transit of Venus can be safely observed, similar to a solar eclipse but remember to use the correct eye protection. Failure to use protection can result in permanent damage to the eyes.
