The Moon is the closest of our heavenly neighbours and yet despite the countless Moon missions we still  know surprisingly very little about it. This video clip from Nasa accelerates over 4 billion years of evolution to show you how the Moon could have evolved into its present form.

No one is really sure how the Moon was formed. Some theories say it was spun out of the Earth when the Earth was being formed or that it was preformed and captured by the Earths gravitational field. The most popular theory at the moment however, is that it was formed as a result of a giant impact on a newly formed Earth by a meteorite that could have been as big as Mars!
