Red Supergiant Star Ends up as Black Hole Without Explosion

Using the Hubble Space Telescope, scientists have detected a red supergiant star that ends up as a black hole without turning into a supernova. This phenomenon may help them better understand why so many stars end up collapsing into a black hole without explosion. The observed star lied 22 million light-years from our planet in a spiral galaxy known as NGC 6946.
