Halley’s Comet is the best known of the regular quick return period comets and is visible from Earth every 75 to 76 years. Sightings of the Comet have been made since ancient times, although at the time the observers were not aware that this was the same revisiting Comet. It was eventually discovered as a returning comet by Edmond Halley 1n 1705. It last appeared in the inner Solar System in 1986 and will not appear again till 2061.
Halley’s Comet was seen in 1066 and was recognised as a bad omen. Later, Harold the King Of England was killed in the Battle of Hastings and William The Conqueror became King of England, obviously it was a good omen for him! The 1066 coming of Halley’s Comet is actually recorded in the Bayeux Tapestry, in Saxon Chronicles and The Irish Annals of the Four Masters.
