Until recently the Islamic contributions to astronomy were by enlarge ignored. However the great European Scientists such as Copernicus, Kepler, Newton and Galileo frequently referred to Islamic texts in their works. The contribution of Islam to modern science is now being recognised.

A significant number of stars in the sky such as  Aldebaran and Altair, and astronomical terms such as alhidade and azimuth and almucanter are still referred to by their Arabic names.
