A look at a future mission due to launch in mid 2013. The Astro-H space mission, (also known as NeXT/SXS) is led by the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), will design and launch a unique satellite capable of detecting and measuring X-rays produced by astronomical objects in the universe.
The Canadian research team, spearheaded by Dr. Gallo, is participating in this venture through their contribution on a new on-board measurement system called the Canadian Astro-H Metrology System (CAMS). This is being developed by Neptec Design Group of Ottawa under a contract by the CSA (Canadian Space Agency), the CAMS will measure the twists and turns of the satellite’s six-metre extendible boom on which the Hard X-Ray Telescope is mounted.
