When Neutron Stars Collide

Using the latest state-of-the-art supercomputer models, scientists have shown that colliding neutron stars can produce a gamma-ray burst. This follows on from earlier simulations which showed that such collisions could form black holes.
The simulations reveal how the merging neutron stars magnetic fields organize themselves in such a way that a jet stream of gamma rays is formed.
